Preparing your home
To make your home safer and more comfortable for your recovery, it is always good to have a support person or group, so don’t hesitate to ask friends or family members to help you. Some equipment you need may not be available until after surgery. (Insurance does not always reimburse until after surgery is complete). We recommend that you do as much preparation as you can in advance.
Hint for Home Preparation
Stock up on toiletries, foods that are easy to prepare, and other items you’ll need during recovery. A reacher can come in handy when you need to grasp objects that are too far below or above you. Try to store items at a convenient height. Small items can be carried in an apron with pockets.
Store foods and other supplies between waist and shoulder level. This makes it easier to reach things without straining your hip.
Rearrange things temporarily so you don’t have to use the stairs more than you need to.
Buy or borrow a portable telephone so you can keep it within easy reach.
Ask about long-handled aids to reach items and a long-handled shoehorn.
Getting into cars
As a passenger, be sure the car seat is all the way back. Lower yourself onto the seat, allowing it to support you. Then slide back in a semi-reclining position, and pivot your body and legs around front.
Hints for the Bathroom
Prevent slips and falls by installing railings and non-slip surfaces. Watch out for hazards, such as wet floors and use a non-slip bath mat to help keep the floor dry. Install a hand-held shower hose, long-handled sponge, or grab bars in your shower or tub for support as you get in and out.
Make bathing easier by using a shower hose, liquid soap, and a long-handled sponge. With these accessories on hand, you will not have to bend at the hip.
