Bob
CONSERVE® PLUS Total Hip Resurfacing

Bob always led a very active life, spending his spare time outside of work biking, golfing, and skiing. Even now, at 48 years old, he didn’t have any plans of slowing down although, due to pain in his right leg, it looked as if he was going to have no choice. Almost eight years ago, he began to experience pain in his right hip and was diagnosed with arthritis. As a dedicated athlete, Bob worked through the pain with the help of prescription anti-inflammatory medications and physical therapy. As the pain worsened with time, Bob felt like he was running out of options and would have to curtail his active lifestyle. “When the pain became unbearable, I was having a hard time walking distances and I was waking up in the middle of the night with pain – so, I went to an orthopaedic surgeon to be reevaluated. To my dismay, he said only a hip replacement would ease my pain, but I was too young to be a candidate. I was devastated,” Bob explained.

After receiving the bad news, Bob went home and began researching alternative treatments and speaking with friends in the medical field. He was delighted to learn about a new alternative to total hip replacement specially designed for patients with enough healthy hip bone to be “resurfaced” instead of completely “replaced”. After researching the new procedure and speaking with a friend who had participated in a clinical trial for Wright’s CONSERVE PLUS® hip resurfacing procedure, Bob made an appointment to see if he was a candidate with his orthopaedic surgeon, Dr. Myron Stachniw.

After examining Bob’s hip and reviewing x-rays, Dr. Stachniw determined he was an appropriate candidate. Bob underwent the hip resurfacing procedure in November, 2006. The day after surgery, he was able to walk laps around the hospital first on crutches and then with a cane, virtually pain-free. “It was absolutely amazing. After years of pain and stiffness, I was able to move freely without pain. Feeling this good just one day after surgery gave me so much hope for the future,” he said. Bob spent only three nights in the hospital recovering and was back to work within a week.

Just three weeks after surgery, Bob was back at the gym riding the stationary bike and walking on the treadmill. He did extensive physical therapy to ensure his muscles returned to peak shape which would allow him to pursue his favorite activities. “I can’t believe how well my hip is holding up. I am in better shape now and have shaved time off my biking." In the first summer after his hip resurfacing, Bob rode over 1000 miles on his bike only being held back by his busy schedule. Bob no longer experiences pain when walking long distances and can even keep up on the golf course. Although it may seem trivial, he relishes knowing that he can sit cross legged for the first time in seven years. Bob is grateful for his new hip and looks forward to skiing this winter without any pain.
