Clay
CONSERVE® PLUS Hip Resurfacing (Right Hip)

Clay, 50, has always led an active lifestyle. He skied, rode his motorcycle, played basketball and loved the great outdoors. Through the years, Clay started to experience pain in his right hip with each mogul skied over and bump hit while riding his motorcycle,. He consulted a physician who told him that he was going to eventually need hip surgery. At the time Clay thought nothing of it and continued living his active lifestyle.

However, in 2004 while on a skiing trip, Clay suffered a bad fall and injured his right hip. X-rays revealed he had arthritis in his hip. During the next 12 months Clay took medications and even tried a cortisone shot to reduce the level of pain.

When this treatment proved ineffective, Clay consulted Dr. Harlan Amstutz who had performed numerous hip replacement operations. Dr. Amstutz recommended Wright’s CONSERVE® PLUS Hip Resurfacing. During this procedure very little bone is removed to insert the artificial femoral head in the femur, ensuring Clay would retain as much healthy bone as possible. A prosthetic cup is also inserted to match the femoral implant. The metal-on-metal head and cup surfaces make for a more durable implant as compared to a metal-on-plastic total hip and give the joint a fluid motion. The larger-sized femoral head and cup is designed to allow patients to experience a greater range of motion, as compared to total hips. Clay decided to move forward with this procedure.

On December 7, 2006 Clay was implanted with Wright’s CONSERVE® PLUS Hip Resurfacing implant. When he awoke from surgery he noticed an immediate difference, in that the pain in his hip was relieved.

Clay remained in the hospital for three days before returning home on crutches. He started exercising after returning home from surgery and within a month was walking unassisted. “It’s given me my life back,” Clay says of his new hip. “Hip pain put my life on hold.” Now, he is back on his motorcycle, walking the dog and is excited to climb mountains again. Clay recently met with Dr. Amstutz who informed him that he sees no reason why he can’t go skiing this winter. “Before surgery my life was ‘I can’t do that.’ Now it’s ‘Hey, why not?’”
