Patient Testimonial
Kevin
CONSERVE® PLUS Total Resurfacing Hip System Recipient, left hip
Kevin, a 48-year-old, dedicated attorney was diagnosed with early degenerative disorder when he was 30 years old. As a tennis and golf player, it was extremely difficult to keep up an active lifestyle when he developed pain in his left hip, which he suffered with for more than 10 years.
Kevin’s pain was so bad that even daily walking became very arduous. “I couldn’t walk a quarter of a mile without crying. It was difficult walking or playing golf and impossible playing tennis. I was nearly disabled.” Additionally, his pain affected his work as an attorney, since he couldn’t give 100 percent to his job. “Approaching the witness stand to show exhibits became quite a chore,” explains Kevin.
After learning that he needed a total hip replacement, Kevin put off surgery for approximately three years, while researching alternatives. Being young and active, Kevin didn’t think that traditional total hip replacement would be the best option. Instead, he researched hip resurfacing and found Dr. Thomas Vail, who was participating in a clinical trial of Wright’s CONSERVE PLUS® hip resurfacing procedure. In the procedure, very little bone is removed to insert the artificial cobalt-chrome femoral head on the femur, ensuring that Kevin could retain as much healthy bone as possible. Dr. Vail told Kevin that he was the perfect candidate for hip resurfacing, and in April 2003, Kevin had the procedure done on his left hip.
According to Kevin, his recovery couldn’t have been better. “Right away after the surgery, my pain just dropped away,” he recalls. A month after his physical therapy ended, he played in a singles tennis match, feeling that “I was as good as new.” After the surgery, he was quickly able to play basketball, go jogging, play tennis and return to his active lifestyle. Additionally, his career was back on track. Kevin explains that after his surgery, he felt he “was in my mid 20s again.”
Kevin states, “I couldn’t be happier with the CONSERVE PLUS® hip resurfacing procedure.” Currently, he is in need of a right hip resurfacing and looks forward to having the procedure done.
