Robert
CONSERVE® PLUS Total Hip Resurfacing Recipient

At 54 years old, Robert reluctantly began to slow down. His right hip was painful; at times excruciatingly so. The pain impacted his athletic life as well as things as simple as tying his shoes. Once an avid sportsman, Robert was forced to limit the activities he enjoyed most - squash, tennis, paddle ball, skiing, mountain climbing, and cycling.

His hip pain started almost a decade ago when Robert was involved in a rollerblading accident that left his hip joint severely damaged. Over the years, his pain increased to a debilitating level. Robert found it difficult to complete the simplest tasks. Movements such as putting on his shoes, driving for long periods, and even sleeping through the night caused him severe pain. "I would wake up a few nights a week moaning in pain. Sometimes my wife would even sleep in the other room," Robert explained.

While he refused to completely alter his lifestyle, it was becoming increasingly difficult for him to live with the pain.

Desperate for a solution that would ease his pain and allow him to stay active, Robert researched a new hip resurfacing procedure that was targeted toward patients living an active lifestyle - and who wished to continue doing so after surgery. Robert consulted with orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Michael Mont who explained that Wright's CONSERVE® PLUS Hip Resurfacing system was a great option. CONSERVE® PLUS Hip Resurfacing is more bone conserving than a traditional hip replacement, as the procedure leaves more of the patient's bone in place and does not require removal of the femur neck shaft. Hip resurfacing is designed to ensure joint stability and lower the risk of hip dislocation.

In September of 2007, Robert had his hip resurfaced and enjoyed a quick recovery and return to activity. "I had surgery on Monday, I was walking with a cane on Wednesday, and I went back to work on Friday." Robert said. Within three weeks, Robert was cycling 35 miles and working on strength training to rebuild his muscles from surgery.

In the past two years, Robert has travelled the world maintaining a very active lifestyle, which has included diverse activities such as riding horses and herding sheep in Kyrgyzstan. He has won several Maryland State age group squash matches, completed a 100-mile bike race and won his club's 50's singles tennis tournament.

"I wanted to get my hip fixed while I still had the drive and energy to return to the top of my game. My new hip has given me a second life," Robert declares.

The CONSERVE® PLUS Hip Resurfacing System is an alternative to traditional hip replacement to treat chronic hip pain. In suitable patients, resurfacing allows the painful area of the hip joint to be surgically treated while retaining as much healthy bone as possible. Typically, only the head of the femur will be reshaped and resurfaced with a femoral shell during hip resurfacing. In comparison, a total hip replacement requires the removal of the entire hip joint.

These results are specific to this individual only. Individual results and activity levels after surgery vary and depend on many factors including age, weight and prior activity level.
There are risks and recovery times associated with surgery and there are certain individuals who should not undergo surgery.
