Brian, GRAFTJACKET® Matrix for Ulcer Repair Recipient
Brian, 40, has had diabetes for more than 15 years. Because of his condition, Brian has experienced foot ulcer problems twice in the past five years. The first was relatively minor and treated easily, but in July 2005, he had a second episode, and this foot ulcer proved more difficult to treat.
Because of the severity of the foot ulcer and the throbbing pain in his left foot, Brian’s life took a considerable turn for the worse. He was unable to spend time playing with his seven year-old son, with whom he had previously enjoyed playing ball, running around outside and swimming. After several months of deterioration, Brian was treated surgically with deep debridement, and the long recovery time forced him to take more than three months time on disability as his job as a telephone switching technician required him to be continually on his feet. He also endured complications that landed him in the hospital for ten days. The pain was too great for him to continue, and his doctors warned him that his foot might have to be amputated. Brian just didn’t feel that his treatment was living up to his needs.
Luckily, around that time, Brian read an article in his local newspaper, the Pocono Record, about the GRAFTJACKET® Matrix technology and surgery offered by Dr. Stephen Brigido to treat diabetic foot ulcers. GRAFTJACKET® Regenerative Tissue Matrix supports revascularization and repopulation by host tissue allowing the body to repair the wound. In April 2006, Brian went for a consult visit with Dr. Brigido and was told that he was a perfect candidate for GRAFTJACKET® Matrix. The minimally-invasive procedure was performed as an out patient procedure at the beginning of May.
Following the surgery, Brian spent two weeks on crutches and another four weeks in a surgical shoe. Just six weeks after surgery, Brian he was wearing his regular tennis shoes, and even went hiking with his son’s Cub Scout Troop. Today, Brian’s ulcer is completely closed and he is enjoying his job and family again.
“This treatment completely changed my life,” says Brian. “I am now able to do all the activities I’d been forced to set aside - from the basics of mowing the grass, to the necessity of spending time with my son.”
