Sonja, GRAFTJACKET® Matrix for Ulcer Repair Recipient
Like millions of Americans, Sonja, a 61-year-old woman from Indiana, suffers from stasis dermatisis, an inflammatory skin disease caused by fluid build-up under the skin in the lower extremities. About a year ago, Sonja developed symptoms including leg swelling, skin discoloration, and a large sore, commonly referred to as a venous stasis ulcer, in the middle of her shin that wasn’t going away. Her general practitioner suggested she visit the Wound Care Center in Indianapolis for treatment.
At the Wound Care Center, Sonja was treated by Dr. Michael Baker. She was immediately put on antibiotics, but after a month, her venous stasis ulcer was not improving. In fact, the wound was getting wider and deeper and Sonja began having difficulty walking without pain. Sonja grew nervous that the wound wasn’t healing and feared she could lose her leg. When Dr. Baker suggested an innovative treatment called GRAFTJACKET® - Ulcer Repair, without hesitation, Sonja decided to move forward. “When you have a hole in your leg that’s progressively getting worse, you will try anything to make it go away,” says Sonja.
In January 2004, two months after the venous stasis ulcer formed, Sonja had her first and only GRAFTJACKET® treatment. The GRAFTJACKET® product is an acellular, dermal repair matrix that rapidly remodels to the patient’s own tissue. The minimally-invasive procedure was performed in an outpatient setting. A few months later, Sonja was able to throw away the bandage she had been wearing since the inception of the ulcer. Sonja believes that without the GRAFTJACKET® treatment, “the wound would have taken forever to heal!”
“GRAFTJACKET® Ulcer Matrix definitely worked for me,” says Sonja. “I am so thankful this treatment worked so well and my wound has completely closed. I was afraid I might lose my leg and am relieved I don’t have to worry about that anymore.”
