Anyone with diabetes can develop a foot ulcer, and about 15% of diabetics do. Native Americans, African Americans, Hispanics and older men are more likely to develop foot ulcers. People who are at a higher risk of developing a foot ulcer are those using insulin, as well as patients with diabetes-related kidney, eye, and heart disease. Being overweight and the use of alcohol and tobacco also play an important role in the development of foot ulcers.
