 Hip - Resurfacing
 During & After Surgery

Typically, only the femur head will be reshaped and resurfaced with a femoral shell during a hip resurfacing. The hip socket may be treated at the same surgery. The surgical procedure will reduce pain and ensure joint stability. The chance of dislocation is also lower with this surgery than with a total hip replacement.

Recovery from a hip resurfacing surgery is expected to last from six weeks to three months. Rehabilitation is very important to your recovery. You will speed up your recovery process if you remain active and perform your hip strength building exercises. A physical or occupational therapist will help you create an exercise program that is right for you.

As with a total hip replacement, recovery goals include a return of function and a reduction in pain. Many patients can expect a return to their normal activities after completing a comprehensive rehabilitation program.
You will want to discuss some of the same issues that are listed above with your doctor prior to surgery, as well as the following questions:

1) How long is my implant expected to last?
2) What are the pros and cons to this surgery versus an alternative surgery?
3) What is the success rate?
4) What is the expected recovery time?
5) How soon can I resume my normal activities?
6) Will I need additional surgeries?

After successfully completing a physical therapy program, most people can expect to walk pain free for long distances without an assistive device. With proper physical therapy, most patients are able to return to activities like walking, hiking, golfing and gardening.
