Cynthia CONSERVE® Total Hip with BFH® Technology, SUPERCAP™ Technique
Cynthia, 50, is a medical assistant whose job requires her to be on her feet for much of the day. For the past three years, she has suffered with extreme pain in her back and right leg, that severely restricts her movement. When the pain began, Cynthia assumed it was related to a major injury she suffered several years ago: she had fallen down a flight of 14 stairs and was in the hospital for 14 days with many badly broken bones. Even after treatment, she had continuing pain in her right leg that eventually traveled to her groin and into her foot.
Cynthia could barely walk and was forced to use a cane to get around at work. Even on her best days, she walked with a very noticeable limp, and the repetitive strain on her back caused six herniated discs over the course of three years. She tried cortisone shots to alleviate the pain, but they never really had an impact. Finally, she went to her physician and described the pain. Her physician suggested that she get her right hip looked at by a specialist.
Cynthia did some research on hip doctors to ensure that she was going to get treatment from one of the best. She came across Dr. Douglas Patch and decided that she should go see him sooner rather than later. When she first met Dr. Patch, Cynthia says “I told him that he had better be a good doctor, but also had to have a great sense of humor, which he did.” He took an x-ray of her hip and explained to her that the x-rays didn’t look good at all; she needed hip replacement as soon as possible. Dr. Patch wanted to get her in the very next day, but Cynthia told him that was too soon. She had to get her life in order before surgery. They compromised and Cynthia scheduled surgery a month later.
On Wednesday April 25th Cynthia went in for hip replacement surgery. She was implanted with Wright’s CONSERVE® Total Hip with BFH® Technology.
Dr. Patch is one of few surgeons who uses the SUPERCAP™ tissue-sparing technique for implanting the hip and Cynthia was amazed by her quick recovery. She got out of the surgery and later that night felt good enough to order a large pepperoni pizza which she shared with the hospital staff. She even walked to go to the bathroom that evening. Cynthia recalls, “the nurse caught me crying as I walked, and she assumed I was in pain. But, I was crying because I was just so happy. It was the first time I had been able to walk in such a long time!” She was released from the hospital on Saturday morning and had physical therapy come to her house on Monday. Her therapists were amazed at how well she moved and actually told her to stop using the walker and cane because she didn’t need them anymore.
Cynthia can now walk without limping, allowing her to get around better at work, especially on the days when she visits patients in their homes. She has taken up dancing and is now about to play with her granddaughter without having to suffer because of her hip. When asked how she feels after the hip replacement surgery she sums it up in one word, “Amazing!”
