Mary CONSERVE® Total Hip with BFH® Technology, SUPERCAP™
Four years ago, Mary would never have thought that she would finally be pain free. A former executive secretary and long time owner of a flower business, Mary decided that she couldn’t go on in life with the amount of pain that she was suffering. At that time she was in unbearable back pain, and was undergoing treatment at a spine specialty center for spondylosis. Leaving the spine center, Mary went to an osteopath who diagnosed the problem and confirmed it with an MRI of her left hip. She was a candidate for hip replacement surgery.
She was advised to see Dr. Douglas Patch, since she wanted minimally invasive surgery. He told her to come into the office in three weeks. Shortly after her visit with Dr. Patch, she had her left hip replaced on June 2, 2004. She underwent physical therapy shortly after the surgery. The recovery took some time, but Mary was finally feeling much better with the new hip when she started feeling some pain in her right leg. She knew that it is common to need both hips replaced and decided to get the treatment done, if necessary.
In May 2007, Mary had her right hip replaced using Wright’s CONSERVE® Total Hip with BFH® Technology. Dr. Patch is one of a select group of surgeons who uses the SUPERCAP™ Tissue-Sparing Surgical Technique for implanting the hip, and Mary was amazed by her quick recovery. She was hospitalized for just four days, went home on crutches, and shortly after switched to a cane. She found that it was much easier to get around after this surgery as compared to her first hip replacement, and she was in only a minimal amount of pain. Mary says, “I’m now going to outpatient physical therapy, and I’m moving much better than before the surgery, and in so much less pain.” The instant weight bearing feature of the SUPERCAP™ minimally-invasive surgery was very attractive. And, now Mary can do many of the things she has wanted to do for the past four years.
“Dr. Patch is a very compassionate man without an ego. It feels good knowing that it’s all behind me now,” said Mary. Today, she plays duplicate bridge twice weekly with her friends and is on the Board of the Friends of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute doing volunteer work.
