June, Bilateral CONSERVE® Total Hip with BFH® Technology Recipient
About 20 years ago June and her husband were busily taking care of June's mother as she recovered from a recent hip replacement. It was a painful surgery and had a long recovery period. The memory of this trying time was at the forefront of June's mind when, at 50 years old, she was told she needed to have both of her own hips replaced.
She was suffering from severe deterioration of the cartilage in the hip socket. It was very painful, but she was instructed, like many patients, to return when she couldn't stand it any more for a total hip replacement.
After 5 years June had such a limited range of motion in her hips she could longer stand upright and was using a walker full time. Simple tasks such as driving into town caused excruciating pain. Her mother was constantly urging her to undergo replacement surgery. Even though June's own mom's recovery process, after hip replacement surgery, had been difficult and painful, she felt the benefits of having her hip joints replaced far outweighed the negatives. In fact, even 20 years after having her own hips replaced, June's mother still felt younger than she did before her surgery. June decided to follow her mother's advice and went to see Dr. Margaret Ferhle.
Dr. Ferhle recommended using Wright's CONSERVE® Total Hip with BFH® Technology. This prosthetic is designed to mimic the natural anatomy and motion of the hip. It features a larger femoral ball and socket design which allows for greater range of motion and can reduce the incidence of dislocation. Additionally, the implant's metal-on-metal bearing surface provides added durability and reduced wear compared to alternative treatment options.
In August of 2006 June had her left hip replaced. Six weeks later, her right hip was replaced as well. She followed her doctor's recovery instructions closely and, by New Year's Day, was walking without assistance and without pain.
"Looking back, if I'd known how good I would feel, I would have had it (a bilateral hip replacement) done a few years prior. It's wonderful to have my life back."
Wright's CONSERVE® Total Hip with BFH® Technology is designed to replicate the natural anatomy and motion of the hip. It features a larger femoral ball and socket design that more closely matches the sizing of a natural femoral head, resulting in greater range of motion, and can reduce the potential for dislocation. In addition, the implant's metal-on-metal bearing surface is designed to offer the benefits of added durability and reduced wear compared to alternative treatment options. Furthermore, the larger implant, in conjunction with PROFEMUR® modular necks, enables a greater range of motion without impingement of the hip, allowing most patients to enjoy a wide range of activities after their surgery. This can make a big difference for those trying to return to a more normal, active lifestyle.
These results are specific to this individual only. Individual results and activity levels after surgery vary and depend on many factors including age, weight and prior activity level.
There are risks and recovery times associated with surgery and there are certain individuals who should not undergo surgery.
