Eric, LINEAGE® Ceramic Hip Recipient
About four years ago, 32-year-old Eric started experiencing sharp pains in his knee and in the inside of his leg. Eric was active and had performed martial arts for 12 years. He went to his primary care doctor who told him that he had a 15 percent loss of range of motion. Eric was diagnosed with advanced degenerative arthritis - the cause of which was never determined.

After consulting with an orthopaedic surgeon, he was advised that he would need a total hip replacement within a year and would likely need multiple revision surgeries because he was so young. He ultimately decided to put off having the hip replacement and instead relied on painkillers to ease his pain. He was "buying himself time" and tried several options, but the pain was becoming increasingly difficult for him to tolerate as he was unable to bend over or walk correctly.

Eric booked an appointment with Kristaps Keggi, MD, who advised Eric to have a total ceramic hip replacement. Eric chose the Wright LINEAGE® Ceramic-on-Ceramic Hip Implant. In contrast to plastic and metal implants, ceramics exhibit low wear and osteolysis is limited. Prolonging the lifespan of a hip implant makes ceramics a more viable option for younger patients, like Eric. Dr. Keggi performed the minimally-invasive surgery and Eric was out of the hospital only three days after having the surgery. Eric even climbed two flights of stairs once home.

Eric was out of bed the next day and stopped using a cane after a week. Two months after the surgery he went snorkeling in St. John. He admits he never would have been able to spend the whole day in the water before the surgery. He feels like a new man and friends and family are noticing the major difference the implant has had on his life.

He was once afraid that he wouldn't be able to keep up with his daughter, but now he has no problem running after her. Eric can once again ride a bike and use a treadmill - without hip pain. According to Eric, he doesn't even notice the implant at all.

"I thought I was buying myself time, when really I was robbing myself of having a normal life."
