Ed, LINEAGE® Ceramic Hip Recipient

Ed Carter, 50, was diagnosed with juvenile arthritis in his knees when he was just nine years old. He suffered with extremely painful episodes until the age of 20, when the pain disappeared enabling Ed to become active again. Ed was told, however, to expect that the disease would be with him for the rest of his life and he dreaded its return.
While in college, Ed played on the soccer team, and after graduation, he pursued a career as an accountant, having chosen the profession because it suited the sedentary lifestyle he know he would eventually have to adapt. Ed had three children and is thankful that his respite from the pain of arthritis allowed him to be actively involved in their childhoods.

Sadly, the arthritis returned when Ed was in his forties, and this time, it took a different form than the juvenile arthritis he'd previously had. Ed saw his doctor and was diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis (AS), a chronic, multi-system inflammatory disorder of the joints. This time, his left hip was most affected, and it deteriorated very quickly. In May 2002, the pain became debilitating.
While Ed was on a number of medications, none offered much relief, as much of his joint cartilage was gone. His whole lifestyle changed. While on vacation one year before, Ed couldn't walk 20 feet on the boardwalk, and had to sit down frequently. He even collapsed while standing.

In 2003, Ed finally underwent surgery to replace his left hip. Ed doctor, Dr. Eric Hume, felt that the best option for him was Wright's LINEAGE® Ceramic-on-Ceramic Hip implant. Now, Ed says he is "100,000 percent better" and claims, "it was the best thing I ever did." In just seven weeks post-surgery, Ed was golfing, fishing, and kayaking.
Reflecting on his experience, Ed recalls that prior to his life-changing operation, "You let the pain and joint control you." Now, three years later, Ed is 50 years old and leading an active, pain-free lifestyle, enjoying his family and working to put his three children through college.
