Patient Testimonial
Steven
CONSERVE® PLUS Total Resurfacing Hip System Recipient

When he was in his late twenties, Steven (now 47 years old), was diagnosed with osteoarthritis in his legs and hips. Although he had no joint pain, he did experience severe muscle aches. He was an avid sportsman and enjoyed numerous outdoor activities ranging from biking to golf.
Steve decided to take a proactive approach to his treatment and, at his physician's recommendation, immediately went on a prescription anti-inflammatory to control the pain. When this medication failed to control his symptoms, he tried another anti-inflammatory but only took the medication for a month due to its ineffectiveness.
When asked about the hardest parts of his life at this time, Steve mentions that sitting caused him awful pain. He could not drive for more than 15 minutes without stopping to stretch, and that by the end of each day, he could barely walk. Although he adjusted to many of the discomforts typically caused by his bad hips and leg, when he could no longer walk up and down stairs, he knew that something additional had to be done.

Steve spent time researching his condition and possible treatment options. He came across Wright's CONSERVE® PLUS total hip resurfacing arthroplasty where a metal artificial femoral head is inserted into the top of the femur.
Very little bone is removed when implanting the device allowing the patient to retain as much healthy bone as possible. A matching cup is put into the socket giving the joint a fluid motion and promoting bone longevity. Steve was also pleased that it wouldn't be necessary to cut his whole femur, a clear benefit to a young, active patient. All of these factors made the CONSERVE® PLUS resurfacing implant a great choice for Steve.

On September 21, 2004, Steve had his right hip resurfaced. Now pain-free, he has returned to the activities and sports that he loves after putting them off for five years. Steve can enjoy long bike rides and golf trips with no suffering. He can also walk up the stairs without enduring a massive amount of pain. His range of motion has improved "quite a bit" and he no longer experiences joint pain. Last summer he drove all the way from Michigan to Alabama and back with no problem.
Steve is so happy with the results that he plans to have his left hip resurfaced in the very near future. "I am pain-free now and that is a huge change in my life. Before, I was always suffering," he said. "I made a hole-in-one on Friday the third of June, and know it would not have been possible without my surgery and Wright's hip resurfacing implant."
