Sean, GRAFTJACKET® Matrix for Ulcer Repair Recipient
Sean, 28 years of age, has had diabetes for the past 16 years. As a result, he is no stranger to the wide-ranging complications of the disease. When he noticed a cut on the bottom of his toe in early summer 2004, he was not alarmed until his entire foot began to swell. He went to Dr. Steven Lemberger, a podiatrist in NJ for an examination. Dr. Lemberger recognized Sean had developed a diabetic foot ulcer that had become considerably infected – so much so that the infection had already penetrated to the bone. Dr. Lemberger attempted to drain the infected area, but with the infection progressing as fast as it had, there was only one way to combat its spread; amputation of one of his toes.

In July 2004, Sean had the second toe on his right foot amputated. The wound was slow to mend and Sean grew impatient to expedite the healing process. His quality of life had diminished significantly as he battled to keep the wound dry and elevated.

Three to four months after the amputation, Dr. Lemberger suggested that Sean try a new treatment utilizing Wright’s GRAFTJACKET® Ulcer Repair Matrix, a new regenerative tissue graft designed to repair challenging diabetic ulcers of the foot. In Sean’s case, Dr. Lemberger thought a single GRAFTJACKET® application would significantly improve his post-amputation wound. The outpatient procedure took approximately one hour to complete and Sean was sent home to rest.

Almost immediately after the application of the GRAFTJACKET® Matrix, Sean’s wound began healing and by eight weeks, his wound was completely healed. He no longer experiences pain when he walks and has made a conscious effort to check his feet more thoroughly since the toe amputation.

Legally blind, Sean has spent a good deal of his life overcoming obstacles. Use of GRAFTJACKET® matrix, to heal his foot ulcer, has eliminated his foot pain and enabled Sean to feel more in control of his life. Sean wants others to know that there are non-traditional wound care options available today to aid in swift recovery.

“I would definitely recommend GRAFTJACKET® matrix to others,” he says. “It is a great product for wound closure.”
