Dr. Osteen, MICRONAIL® Distal Radius Fixation Recipient

Play Video Watch Video

Dr. Osteen fractured his right wrist in February 2006 during a skiing trip in Vail, Colorado with some friends leaving him with a painful, unstable wrist.

Dr. Osteen is a practicing orthopaedic surgeon, so having full hand and wrist function is incredibly critical in order for him to perform surgery. Not to mention, he is also an avid tennis player, biker and runner. It quickly became apparent this injury would not go away on its own and he was not going to regain full function without surgical intervention.

He went to see his friend and colleague Dr. Mark Warburton who, in collaboration with Wright, had co-invented a new surgical wrist repair device that enables many patients to utilize the wrist in one to two weeks, compared to the traditional average recovery time of three months. The MICRONAIL® Distal Radius Fixation Implant is a permanent implant that resides inside the bone and is implanted via a minimally-invasive surgical technique which allows patients to recover more quickly than traditional plating techniques.

A broken wrist is the most commonly broken bone in the body, however, until the MICRONAIL® implant was developed, no other treatment existed that allowed early wrist function. Dr. Osteen was implanted with the MICRONAIL® implant on May 15, 2006 and he took off a week from work. Nine days after his own surgery, he was back in the operating room again – able to treat some of his wrist fracture patients with the MICRONAIL® implant, as well.

Today, Dr. Osteen is doing fine and he finds it really a nice coincidence that he can share his own surgical experience regarding the MICRONAIL® implant with his own patients that he treats for wrist fractures. According to Dr. Osteen, “Now that I am approaching 5 months out from surgery, I have returned to normal function including weight lifting and tennis without symptoms. I was able to start strengthening my arm at a very early stage (3-4 weeks). Because of this I feel my recovery has been accelerated and more complete than otherwise would have occurred with less stable and more invasive techniques.”

“Based on my experience as a patient, when I’m prescribing the MICRONAIL® implant to my patients, I know with confidence that they are getting the best treatment available for wrist fractures.”

These results are specific to this individual only. Individual results and activity levels after surgery vary and depend on many factors including age, weight and prior activity level.
There are risks and recovery times associated with surgery and there are certain individuals who should not undergo surgery.
