Robert
DYNASTY Cup with Renaissance Stem, SUPERCAP
A former basketball coach for 20 years, Bob, 60, also enjoyed playing softball and baseball with friends. Bob played semipro baseball and fast pitch softball in National tournaments and was also a batting practice pitcher for the Chicago Cubs and the San Francisco Giants. However, during the last five years, a dull pain in his right hip turned into severe discomfort and pain, forcing him to gradually stop almost all physical activities. Bob’s quality of life changed drastically. He couldn’t walk more than 20 steps without stopping to regain his strength.

Unable to participate in the sports he loved, Bob poured himself into his work. “I had no problems sitting in a chair” Bob remembers. “I increased my income because work was the only thing I could do!” However, when he could no longer play basketball with his three daughters, and was unable to visit one daughter in Spain when she studied abroad, he knew that he needed to seek a surgical solution.

Bob began researching hip replacement options, and spent five years deciding which option to choose. He was terrified of the pain associated with the traditional surgical techniques that he found online but, finally found an encouraging website, JimmysNewHip.com. This site, sponsored by Wright, was dedicated to telling the story of tennis legend Jimmy Connors; how he had his hip replaced and had returned to playing tennis in less than six weeks. Through a friend, Bob was referred to Dr. Aaron Salyapongse from the Webster Orthopaedic Medical Group who recommended a similar surgery to Jimmy Connor’s hip replacement using Wright’s DYNASTY® Cup System via the SUPERCAP™ technique.

The DYNASTY® Cup System was inspired by other successful implant designs that feature a larger femoral head, allowing for greater range of motion and less chance of dislocation. Dr. Salyapongse performed the surgery using the SUPERCAP™ Tissue-Sparing / Minimally-Invasive Technique which, unlike a traditional hip replacement, does not require the surgical dislocation of the hip. Using a smaller incision to insert the implant and cutting and stretching fewer muscles can reduce recovery time from months to weeks and the patient’s scar is minimized.

Following his surgery on November 19, 2007, Bob was up walking the very same afternoon. He was able to walk without assistance from a cane in just a week. Bob diligently completed his physical therapy exercises and even picked up pilates to further improve his flexibility. Three months later, Bob was running up to two miles every day. Stretches and exercises are still a part of his daily routine, which has contributed to significant back pain relief as well. “I was concerned that my hip would feel fake,” Bob admits. “But it feels ten times better than I expected. I have no restrictions!”

Says Bob: “My research showed that more than 90 percent of the hip surgeries being done today are still using the old technique and implants. I really cannot comprehend why surgeons would continue to perform the old techniques . . . A couple times every day a huge smile builds up inside me when I enjoy being able to move freely and I just start laughing. Words really cannot express how great I feel and how well this new procedure turned out.”
