Barbara, ADVANCE® Uni-Knee
For most of her life, Barbara, 68, did aerobic exercise every morning in her living room. She usually stretched and jumped in her bare feet, because it made her feel more comfortable. But, after years of poor foot support and repetitive strain, Barbara’s knees began to ache from the stress of this daily regimen; not only while she was in action, but also while she was at rest.
Barbara’s physician informed her that she had worn all of the tissue from her right knee and most of the tissue from her left knee. The pain that she was feeling was bone-on-bone friction; it was so painful for her that she could barely walk.
Barbara contacted Dr. Edward Lisecki, a personal friend and orthopaedic surgeon, and arranged to meet with him for a consultation. During the appointment, Dr. Lisecki examined Barbara and informed her that she would require work on both knees. To ensure the best recovery possible, Dr. Lisecki prescribed a regimen of extensive physical therapy followed by a partial and a total knee replacement.
A few months later, when her legs were stronger from physical therapy, Barbara went in for both a partial knee replacement (a uni-knee) and a total knee replacement. The uni-knee, Wright’s ADVANCE® Unicompartmental Knee, was implanted on her left side and allowed Barbara benefits such as increased joint motion and less bone removal which can provide more options for future procedures, if required.
More severely impacted by tissue loss, Barbara’s right knee required a total knee replacement and was improved using Wright’s ADVANCE® Medial-Pivot Knee.
Only 24 hours after surgery, Barbara was able to walk down the hall of the hospital. She no longer feels bone-on-bone grinding and was thrilled to have two such different procedures that delivered a similarly spectacular result. She credits her fast recovery to dedication and to the physical therapy that she underwent prior to the procedure. Today, five years after the procedure, Barbara is able to exercise with no pain and rides her exercise bike every day.
Wright’s ADVANCE® Uni-Knee is a less-invasive alternative to total knee replacement that is bone conserving. This option is ideal for patients who are in significant pain, but do not require a total knee replacement.
Wright’s ADVANCE® Medial-Pivot Knee (a total knee replacement) was designed to replicate normal knee motion: bending, rotating, twisting and flexing. This should enable patients to maintain good stability and range of motion, post-operatively.
These results are specific to this individual only. Individual results and activity levels after surgery vary and depend on many factors including age, weight and prior activity level.
There are risks and recovery times associated with surgery and there are certain individuals who should not undergo surgery.
