Betty, ADVANCE® STATURE™ Knee Recipient

It’s almost been nine years since Betty had her first knee replacement surgery. She had been experiencing severe pain in her left knee due to worsening osteoarthritis and decided to have a replacement to lessen her pain and increase her mobility. Now nine years later, she found herself in a familiar situation. Only this time, it was her right knee. Over the past three years, Betty’s right knee had become increasingly crippled with pain. She was forced to use a cane for stability and walk slowly for fear of falling. “I liked to shop, but I could only go for short amounts of time before I needed to sit down and rest. I was a real burden on those with me – always holding them up,” Betty explains.

Betty finally decided it was time to do something about the pain. She wanted her life back. So, she went to see Dr. Levy, an orthopedic surgeon, who after examining x-rays, recommended knee replacement surgery. “I wasn’t sure what to expect with surgery. With my first replacement, it took me a long time to recover, and I was in pain. I heard knee replacements had come a long way. So I was hopeful it would go smoothly, and it did!”

In June, Dr. Louis Levy replaced Betty’s knee with the newly FDA-cleared ADVANCE® STATURE™ knee implant that is better to suit her narrow anatomy. Wright’s ADVANCE® STATURE™ knee features a tapered design to address the implant sizing needs of patients with a narrower knee anatomy or smaller skeletal frame. Previous knee replacement options had a universal sizing approach. However, research has shown that knee replacements can be specialized to fit each patient’s unique anatomy for greater stability and mobility.

Betty was pleasantly surprised with the ease and success of her knee replacement compared to her surgery nine years ago. “My first replacement took so long to recover from – almost an entire year, and I was in a lot of pain afterwards,” Betty explains. Within a day after her second replacement, Betty was walking around with the help of a walker, and now she is only using a cane. Her family can see a big difference in her movement, and Betty already feels her new knee is stronger and more stable than her old one. By her granddaughter’s wedding this September, Betty hopes to be able to walk unassisted. “I know I am 81 years old, but I still want to get out and enjoy my life. I just wasn’t satisfied with my quality of life. It wasn’t where I wanted it to be. I just want to keep moving, and now I can,” Betty shares. Betty loves to travel and shop, and she can’t wait to start enjoying life again thanks to her new knee.
