Cathey, ADVANCE STATURE™ Knee Implant
Cathey was diagnosed with osteoarthritis when she was just 34 years old. For the next four years, Cathey did her best to endure the severe pain in her left knee without taking any medication because she was afraid of its side effects on the rest of her body. “Exercising was out of the question,” Cathey remembers. “All I could do to keep moving was to wade in a swimming pool and ride a stationary bike.”
Finally, when Cathey’s youngest son asked to go to Disney World, she realized she needed to do something about her knee pain. She had to put an end to her limiting lifestyle that was affecting everything from gardening to her job. She decided to consult Dr. Kevin Crawford, a colleague at Oakwood Hospital. Since the joints in her knee were bone-on-bone, Dr. Crawford warned that she would likely need a total knee replacement. However, Cathey delayed surgery by taking two cortisone injections to the knee and having arthroscopic surgery. When those treatments provided only temporary relief, Cathey told Dr. Crawford that she was ready for total knee replacement.
On June 27, Dr. Crawford performed a total knee replacement on her left knee using Wright’s ADVANCE STATURE™ Knee implant. The ADVANCE STATURE™ knee replacement was ideal for Kathy because it features a tapered design to address the implant sizing needs of patients with a narrower knee anatomy or smaller skeletal frame. Previous knee replacement options had a universal sizing approach. However, research has shown that knee replacements should be specialized to fit each patient for greater stability and mobility. Although women are generally smaller than men and may more often require smaller knee implants, patients of either gender may possess a physical stature that would benefit from a narrower implant design.
Cathey is one of the first patients in Michigan to receive the new ADVANCE STATURE™ knee replacement from Wright and is the first patient in Michigan to receive the ADVANCE BIOFOAM™ tibial implant. The BIOFOAM™ technology allows for the patient’s natural bone to grow into the implant and eliminates the need to use bone cement to attach the implant to bone.
Cathey’s goal is to participate in the Breast Cancer Three Day next February in Phoenix, Arizona. Her mother, grandmother and mother-in-law all have breast cancer. Although the event will require her to walk 20 miles a day, she feels inspired and is up for the challenge. “Prior to my surgery, I couldn’t even walk a mile.”
