Chuck, ADVANCE® Double-High Medial-Pivot Knee Recipient

It was a high school football injury that caused the torn ACL in his left knee. When Chuck had arthroscopic surgery to repair the accumulated damage in 1988, the doctor told him he would need joint replacement after about 15 years.

Chuck (age 49), a competitive body builder and owner/operator of a fitness center in Arkansas, has done heavy weight-lifting all of his adult life and the knee held up quite well for a long time. Ironically, it was simple activities that started leading to the knee popping out of joint.

“Things like walking to the refrigerator. I mean, give me a break,” Morgan said. “But it really hurt when that happened, and it swelled up like a pumpkin. So I knew it was time to do something about it again.”

He sought three doctors’ opinions and decided to go ahead with a total knee replacement using Dr. C. Lowry Barnes of Little Rock, and the Wright ADVANCE® Double-High Medial-Pivot Knee implant. There were other options available, but he decided he wanted the most permanent and durable “repair” he could find so that he could continue being active and competing as a body builder.

Prior to surgery he consulted Robert Farqua, a friend and professional trainer in Little Rock, who helped him better prepare the knee for the surgery through a strength-training program to make the muscles around the knee as fit as possible. “Chuck had everything going for him: he had the best surgeon, the best equipment (the Advance® Double-High implant), and he was the best patient because of the prep work he had done,” Farqua said. “And if you look at the results, I think it made all the difference in the world.”

Morgan’s surgery was March 3, 2006, after which he began diligently working the new knee into shape through physical therapy. “I actually had to take it easier with the physical therapy than what I was used to,” he said. “I’ve always been used to working out really hard, but this was different. I strongly recommend to other knee-replacement patients, just follow the therapist’s instructions – the physical therapy means so much.”

The surgery and recovery work paid off. On June 5, just three months after surgery, Morgan entered the Northwest Arkansas Classic Body Building Contest and won second place in the Master’s Division for men over 40. “I was happy with that considering I had missed a lot of time doing my normal work out,” Morgan said.

Now, he is pain free and the knee feels as good or better than it ever has. “It has worked out better than I could have hoped, and now I wish I had done the knee-replacement years ago.”
