Arthur, ADVANCE® Medial-Pivot Knee
Watch VideoArt has always loved sports and exercise and, in his youth, enjoyed playing hockey, basketball, and softball. As he got older and couldn't play team sports competitively, he exercised regularly to maintain his cardiovascular health. One sport he wanted to take up, but didn't have the time for, was golf. When he semi-retired and moved to Florida in 1977, he was finally able to take up the game.
For several years, Art enjoyed regular golf outings. However, in the late 1990s, he began to feel pain in his knee, which was diagnosed as osteoarthritis. At first, Art's arthritic knee pain caused him mild discomfort, but he treated it with over-the-counter medication and was still able to play golf regularly. As the pain became progressively worse and over-the-counter medication was no longer effective, he received cortisone shots which were only moderately helpful. Hoping to alleviate what was now a constant pain, he underwent arthroscopic surgery but was disappointed with the results. Not only was he living in constant state of agony, he was no longer able to drive the ball very far off the tee. His golf game was suffering and his enjoyment of the game was quickly fading.
"All of my life I worked hard to enjoy my semi-retirement, but instead of being an active participant I was sitting on the sidelines watching everyone else play. It wasn't exactly how I envisioned things," he said.
Anxious to get his life back and return to the golf course, Art made an appointment with Dr. George Markovich at the Institute for Orthopedic Surgery & Sports Medicine. Following the consultation, Dr. Markovich recommended Art undergo a knee replacement. Although Art was hesitant about the surgery, Dr. Markovich eased his worries by explaining how a technology called the ADVANCE® Medial-Pivot knee was designed to mimic the natural movement of the knee and to help restore range of motion. Art consulted with his wife and they both decided a total knee replacement was his best option.
Art underwent surgery just before Thanksgiving in 2002 and he is still amazed by the results. For the first time in several years, he didn't feel the constant throbbing pain he had lived with for so long. Several days after surgery, he began walking around with an aide and began his physical therapy. Within several months of surgery, Art was back playing golf. In his first tournament back, he outdrove all of his friends.
"My friends thought it would take me a while to get my game back, but with my new knee it was as if I had never stopped playing. Getting my knee replaced gave me back my life and my golf game," said Art.
