Patient Testimonial
Georgia, ADVANCE® Medial-Pivot Knee Recipient
Retirement was everything Georgia dreamed it would be. She enjoyed many recreational activities, but her favorite pastime was playing golf four times a week with the ladies golf league. After 50 years, Georgia was pleased with her skill set, but in early 2008, she noticed her swing wasn't quite what it once was. When she began waking at night with pain in her knee, found it extremely difficult to walk any distance and couldn't complete 18 holes of golf, she knew it was time to seek an expert medical opinion.
Georgia made an appointment with Dr. Lowry Barnes in July 2008 and was surprised to learn how quickly her knee became so arthritic. Although she underwent arthroscopic knee surgery to treat her arthritis several years earlier, she couldn't believe how intensely the pain returned. An x-ray revealed that there was little-to-no cartilage in her knee joint, and Dr. Barnes suggested a knee replacement. At first, Georgia was hesitant to undergo surgery, but Dr. Barnes explained how the ADVANCE® Medial-Pivot knee by Wright Medical was designed to mimic the natural movement of the knee and restore the range of motion.
After carefully considering all of the information Dr. Barnes provided her, Georgia decided to have her knee replaced. On January 12, 2009, her knee was replaced and the results have been outstanding. As Georgia says, "Although at first I was hesitant to undergo surgery, I was growing increasingly frustrated by my inability to enjoy my retirement. I knew in order to return to the golf course I had to have my knee replaced."
Georgia admits the first several weeks after surgery were challenging, but she committed herself to performing the physical therapy required to rebuild the strength in her knee. Each day she felt her knee getting stronger and the pain subsiding, and on April 1, 2009, she returned to the golf course.
Upon returning to the golf course, Georgia immediately noticed a significant improvement in her game. For the first time in recent memory, she teed off and completed 18 holes without a throbbing sharp pain in her knee. Three weeks after her return to the golf course, Georgia hit a hole in one! She is consistently amazed by how much of her golf game and life has improved since undergoing knee replacement surgery. As Georgia says, "If I was aware of how severely my arthritic knee was affecting my golf game, I would have opted for knee replacement surgery earlier!"
