Jack, ADVANCE® Medial-Pivot Knee

Jack, a 65 year-old resident of Grapevine, AR could not let persistent knee pain stand in the way of playing the game he loved. Jack, a natural athlete with a competitive spirit, pursued golf because of its technical challenge and his passion for the outdoors. However, a knee injury suffered in college took a toll on Jack and, by his mid-forties, the cartilage in his right knee was literally tearing apart, causing debilitating pain.

The pain led to a limp, forcing Jack to walk with a cane at times. In 1989, he took a hard fall on his right ankle while hunting, causing further damage to the knee. Jack remained optimistic that he would regain full mobility. After twelve years of limping and growing frustration with his knee pain, Jack decided to take action. In February 2001, he underwent a partial knee replacement on his right knee. Soon after that, he was back on the golf course playing at least once a week.

Although Jack no longer felt pain in his right knee, seven years later, he developed arthritis in his left knee. His pain was so persistent that he could no longer play golf and even walking comfortably became a challenge. Jack consulted with Dr. Lowry Barnes, of St. Vincent Orthopedic Center in Little Rock, who suggested a total knee replacement on his left knee. In December 2008, Dr. Barnes implanted the ADVANCE® Medial-Pivot Knee from Wright. The replacement was implanted through a minimally-invasive surgical procedure that uses a smaller incision than traditional surgery. This was designed to provide patients like Jack with quicker rehabilitation time and less pain. Unlike other artificial knees, the engineering of the ADVANCE® Medial-Pivot Knee is such that Jack's weight is distributed more evenly when he bends and straightens his knee, which can allow for reduced wear and prolonged longevity of the prosthesis.

After three months of rehabilitation and recovery, Jack returned to his beloved hobby. Though he had to relearn how to play the game, today he is playing better than ever and is able to hit the course three times a week. Jack exclaims, "I feel like I have my life back now that I can play golf again, pain-free!"

Wright's ADVANCE® Medial-Pivot System is designed specifically to replicate normal knee motion by bending, rotating, and twisting - all with a high degree of stability and range of motion. The ADVANCE® Medial-Pivot Knee replicates the knee's natural anatomy and helps provide more patient confidence and stability1 than other knee implants.
